Yasmin is a director and photographer from Sydney who has built her career around her unique aesthetic and distinct streetwear vibe. Sneakers, however, haven’t always been a part of her wardrobe. We caught up with Yasmin to chat about her sneaker evolution and how they’ve helped shape her personal style.

I first heard about?
Strangely enough, my first sneaker memory happened much later in life. On a trip to London. I was in a thrift store and I picked up a pair of red suede sneakers. They were such a bold move for me. I wore them every day for months. As a teen, I was wearing wedges and cowboy boots. I started wearing sneakers as I got older, when I started prioritising comfort and embracing my 5’2” stature.

You’re wearing Veja in our Sneakertellers campaign. When did you first hear about VEJA?
I first heard about VEJA being a sustainable and ethical brand. I started seeing some of my friends wearing the V-lock sneakers and loving the look, but also convenience. I have pretty heightened claustrophobia, which sometimes translates to a fear of wearing shoes with too many laces that I can’t easily slip off. So VEJA are very ergonomic sneakers for me as well.

What’s your favourite thing about the VEJA V-12?
I feel like the V-12 helps elongate my legs. They’re a great style to wear with a longer skirt or a pair of tailored pants – without feeling like I’m being cut off.

When did you realise you had a love for sneakers?
I discovered my love for sneakers while working. Sneakers are the most practical shoes for long days on set. There’s also so much you can express through your sneakers. I remember being on set where all the crew were wearing black, and the one thing I noticed was their different sneakers and what they said about that person. I think a pair of sneakers can complete any outfit.

How have sneakers shaped your personal style over the years?
I remember seeing this real shift in the blogger movement, where suddenly these high fashion bloggers were walking into fashion week and sitting front row in a long gown with big sleeves and SNEAKERS! I also distinctly remember the ‘jeans and joggers’ movement where suddenly it was cool to wear chunky dad sneakers with a pair of faded mom jeans – I loved this juxtaposition. Fashion and comfort. It was a really funny thing to watch myself grow out of the ‘Jeffery Campbell Platforms’ phase and start wearing sneakers on a night out without feeling self-conscious.

How have sneakers shaped your personal style over the years?
I remember walking into Stationgallery in Bondi when I was living close by – mostly because all the retail team were so cool. They had an attitude and vibe that came through their outfits and I kind of just walked in wanting to get inspired!

Do you have a favourite sneaker story?
I have a really small foot – a size AU 5, so I can sometimes get away with buying kid's shoes which means BRIGHT colourways.

How have sneakers shaped your personal style over the years?
Sneakers have played an important role in my style. I love mixing and matching streetwear with more formal looks – sneakers have been a huge part of this.

When was the first time you shopped at Stationgallery?
The first time I went into a Stationgallery store was when I moved to Melbourne from the country – I just couldn’t believe the range. Coming from a small country town it was like a dream to have so much choice!

Do you have a favourite sneaker story or memory?
I guess my favourite story is in LA. We were about to leave for the airport and I realised I’d bought too many pairs – so my manager and I were madly running around trying to buy an extra suitcase before we left for the airport!

If you had your own action figure, what two accessories would it come with?
I feel like my superpowers are probably making people feel comfortable, and networking and connecting people. I love to talk. And I hate silence haha. So I probably would have some sort of microphone or recording device. A gamer headset? And a camera or some sort of device to document.
