Nawal Sari is a trailblazer in the world of modest fashion and one of this year’s Stationgallery Sneakertellers. She works to dismantle misconceptions many Australians have about the industry while also empowering and uplifting women from all walks of life.

She’s also an avid sneaker wearer and like all of this season’s Sneakertellers, has helped to shape Australian sneaker culture. We sat down with Nawal to chat about her footwear journey and style evolution.

Hey Nawal! You’re wearing Converse in our Stationgallery Sneakertellers campaign. What’s your first memory of the brand?
I have a few key memories. First was ordering pink, glittery, and printed Converses when I was an early teen. Then later in high school the Chuck Taylor All Star Ox were SO in and I begged my parents for a pair – only to ruin them on the school sports field. Now I have a new love for theConverse Chuck Taylor All Star 70s.

What’s your favourite thing about wearing Cons?
I love how versatile they are. You can dress them up or down so easily. They're retro, nostalgic, and have so much story to them – I feel like every human needs a pair of Converse.

What was your first experience with Stationgallery?
First as a customer and later as an employee! I worked at Stationgallery for nearly two years and loved it – I really grew my personal style working there.

When did you realise you had a love for sneakers?
I definitely found my love for them later in my life. When I finished high school and started working at Stationgallery, I bought a new pair of sneakers Onitsuka Tiger Footwear.

How have sneakers shaped your personal style over the years?
I was definitely one of those people who thought sneakers didn’t work with my style. When I realised how edgy they make outfits and comfort makes all the difference, I started choosing styles that work well with my wardrobe. If I want a pop of colour, I’ll occasionally match my hijab and sneakers, or if I want a sleek look I’ll go for some black pair of Converse. There's a shoe for every aesthetic.

If you had your own action figure, what two accessories would it come with?
I would be an iconic hijabi superhero that wears the cutest modest outfits (of-course). I would have a film camera that lets me teleport across the universe and a clothing rack that lets me shapeshift into iconic outfits. Marvel pls sign me.
