Laith McGregor’s latest exhibition presents a series of experimental hand-built and painted ceramic vessels alongside a new suite of digital printed collages that were made over the challenging period of lockdown in 2021. Albeit differing in medium, the exhibition is tied together by a consistent reference to portraiture through the subtle gesturing of facial features.
The exhibition title, Radix, finds its semantic meaning as the ‘base’ or ‘origin’, coming from the Latin word for ‘root’. At the foundation, or 'radix', of McGregor’s practice is an ongoing interest in and inquiry into portraiture, expressed variously through drawing, painting, collage and sculpture.
McGregor’s practice is underpinned by a commitment to physical studio work and the marking of time. His collages are created as a result of ritualistic daily practice through the playful repetition of cutting and pasting processes that allows intuition to guide the composition. Colliding cultural anthropology with visual art, the artist uses imagery sourced from magazines such as National Geographic, and history books, juxtaposed with abstract block colours, to create dynamic landscapes of shape, tone and form.
Radix wrestles with the grey area that exists between fiction and non-fiction, negative and positive, black and white, and two and three dimensions to serve the artist’s ongoing inquiry into the complexities of what it means to be human.
