MANUEL OCAMPO
Horse Cure
7 March – 4 April 2020

STATION | SYDNEY

Horse Cure features a new suite of monochromatic paintings, in a predominantly green palette, that combine Manuel Ocampo's trademark motifs, drawing from popular western iconography, religious symbols, Filipino kitsch, art history, and literature. The exhibition title conjures Edvard Munch’s use of the term ‘horse cure’, or ‘hestekur’, to describe his habit of putting his paintings through their paces to see how they would fare – leaving them outside in the elements to challenge the notion of an artwork’s preciousness.

Ocampo says of his work: “My paintings are often constructed around contradictory tendencies, elaborating discrepancies between what a painting appears to be, and how it behaves in relation to the structures that legitimate its appearance.”
